Burlington Northern GP39-2 Locomotives in BNSF Service

In 1981, Burlington Northern acquired 40 late-production EMD GP39-2 locomotives. These four-axle diesel-electric road switchers featured a turbocharged 12-cylinder EMD 645E3 engine producing approximately 2,300 horsepower, providing efficient power for freight and switching assignments.

Following the 1995 merger of Burlington Northern and Santa Fe, these GP39-2 locomotives became part of the newly formed BNSF Railway fleet. Many continued operating in their original Burlington Northern paint schemes before eventually receiving updated BNSF colors.
