The Delaware & Hudson 7600-Series GP39-2 Locomotives

The Delaware & Hudson Railway acquired 20 EMD GP39-2 diesel locomotives in 1976, numbered 7601 through 7620. Unlike the railroad's earlier former Reading GP39-2 units, these locomotives were purchased new and incorporated several distinctive exterior modifications.

The 7600-series GP39-2 locomotives featured redesigned switcher-style steps, a rearward-positioned fuel tank, and relocated fuel fillers and sight gauges. These characteristics distinguish the D&H locomotives from other early GP39-2 production models.

Powered by a turbocharged 12-cylinder EMD 645E3 diesel engine producing 2,300 horsepower, the GP39-2 provided a balance of performance and fuel efficiency for freight operations.
