The Santa Fe Railway's EMD GP39-2 Locomotives
Electro-Motive Division manufactured the GP39-2 between 1974 and 1984 as a fuel-efficient, four-axle diesel-electric road switcher. Powered by a turbocharged 12-cylinder EMD 645E3 prime mover producing 2,300 horsepower, the locomotive provided an alternative to larger 16-cylinder road diesels.
Santa Fe purchased substantial numbers of GP39-2 locomotives for freight service. Although initially used on faster freight assignments, these versatile units became familiar sights on local trains, industrial branches, and road-switching duties.
