The Santa Fe Railway's EMD GP39-2 Locomotive Fleet
Electro-Motive Division manufactured the GP39-2 between 1974 and 1984 as a fuel-efficient four-axle diesel-electric road switcher. Powered by a turbocharged 12-cylinder EMD 645E3 prime mover producing 2,300 horsepower, the locomotive provided an alternative to larger 16-cylinder road diesels.
Santa Fe purchased substantial numbers of GP39-2 locomotives for freight service. Although initially assigned to faster freight trains, these versatile locomotives became familiar sights on local freight runs, industrial branches, and road-switching assignments.
Athearn Genesis models ATSF #3640 in its early Phase I configuration, reproducing the railroad's distinctive fuel tank placement, walkway steps, front anticlimber, and other identifying details.
