Burlington Northern GP39-2 Heritage and BNSF Service

Burlington Northern acquired 40 late-production EMD GP39-2 locomotives in 1981. These locomotives featured an updated Phase II body design and a turbocharged 12-cylinder EMD 645E3 diesel engine, providing approximately 2,300 horsepower.

Following the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe merger in 1995, the GP39-2 fleet became part of BNSF Railway. Former BN units remained useful for freight assignments, and many continued operating in their original paint before receiving newer BNSF colors.

During the late 2010s, additional locomotives were repainted into contemporary BNSF schemes. Some members of the fleet were also modified for specialized yard and remote-control assignments.
