From Burlington Northern to BNSF Railway

Burlington Northern acquired 40 late-production EMD GP39-2 locomotives in 1981. These turbocharged four-axle diesel-electric road switchers provided efficient mid-horsepower motive power for a wide range of freight assignments.

Powered by a 12-cylinder EMD 645E3 diesel engine producing approximately 2,300 horsepower, the GP39-2 combined the versatility of a four-axle locomotive with the benefits of a smaller turbocharged prime mover.
