Delaware & Hudson's Original EMD GP39-2 Locomotives
In 1976, Delaware & Hudson purchased 20 new EMD GP39-2 locomotives, numbered 7601 through 7620. These four-axle diesel road switchers joined the railroad's fleet during an era when improved fuel efficiency and dependable freight performance were increasingly important.
Unlike the former Reading Railroad GP39-2 locomotives that entered Delaware & Hudson service, the newly purchased 7600-series units featured several recognizable exterior differences.
The most distinctive changes included redesigned stepwells with switcher-style steps, a fuel tank moved toward the rear of the locomotive, and repositioned fuel fillers and sight gauges. These details help identify the D&H 7600-series locomotives and distinguish them from other GP39-2 configurations.
The EMD GP39-2 was built between 1974 and 1984 and featured a turbocharged 12-cylinder EMD 645E3 diesel engine producing approximately 2,300 horsepower. Its four-axle B-B wheel arrangement offered the versatility needed for local freight, regional road service, and switching operations.
