Viewliner sleeping cars were developed during the late 1980s as replacements for Amtrak's aging heritage passenger equipment. Their single-level design was especially suited to eastern routes where tunnel and overhead clearances restricted the use of taller equipment. Production Viewliner I cars entered service in 1995 and are easily recognized by their distinctive double rows of windows.

This WalthersProto model captures the appearance and details of the prototype with a full interior, improved diaphragms, factory-installed wire grab irons and a detailed underbody.
