Viewliner sleeping cars were developed during the late 1980s to replace Amtrak's aging heritage passenger equipment. Designed as single-level cars primarily for eastern routes where tunnel clearances limited taller equipment, production Viewliner I sleepers entered service in 1995. The prototype cars feature roomettes, bedrooms and an accessible bedroom, while their distinctive double rows of windows make them immediately recognizable in an Amtrak consist.
