Prototype Background – The Bethlehem Steel F89-F

The Bethlehem Steel F89-F entered production during the early 1960s as railroads expanded their use of piggyback transportation. More than 9,000 examples were constructed, with many entering Trailer Train service to carry highway trailers between major freight terminals.

Measuring approximately 89 feet 8 inches over the strikers, these long flatcars were distinguished by their C-channel side sills and adaptable deck arrangements. Over their operating lives, F89-F cars served in trailer transportation, autorack assignments, structural steel movements, and other specialized freight applications.

Trailer Train's XTTX configuration featured four collapsible trailer hitches, allowing different combinations of 28-foot, 40-foot, and 45-foot highway trailers. This flexibility helped the railroad industry respond to changing intermodal shipping requirements.
