Measuring approximately 89 feet 8 inches over the strikers, these cars featured distinctive C-channel side sills and an adaptable platform suitable for multiple freight applications.

Trailer Train operated many F89-F flatcars in piggyback service, while individual railroads acquired others for autorack transportation and specialized freight assignments. As highway trailer sizes and shipping requirements changed, the F89-F design could be modified with different hitch configurations or reassigned to other services.
