Prototype History

Electro-Motive Division (EMD) introduced the GP39-2 as a fuel-efficient alternative to the popular GP38-2 diesel locomotive. Powered by a turbocharged 12-cylinder EMD 645E3 diesel engine producing 2,300 horsepower, the GP39-2 offered improved fuel efficiency and performance at higher elevations compared to naturally aspirated diesel locomotives.

The GP39-2 became a versatile four-axle road-switcher used in freight service throughout North America. Portland & Western Railroad operates regional freight services in Oregon, making this locomotive an excellent addition to Pacific Northwest-themed N scale layouts.
