Rapido HO Scale GE 44 Tonner – Southern Pacific #1901 Black Tiger Stripe – DCC/Sound
Add a classic Southern Pacific diesel switcher to your HO Scale railroad with the Rapido Trains GE 44 Tonner Southern Pacific #1901, decorated in the distinctive black Tiger Stripe paint scheme. This detailed Phase Ic locomotive combines prototype-specific features, smooth-running performance, and factory-installed ESU DCC/Sound.
General Electric's 44-ton diesel locomotives were developed for light switching assignments, industrial facilities, and smaller railroad yards. Their compact center-cab design made them particularly useful where larger diesel locomotives were unnecessary.
Southern Pacific GE 44 Tonner #1901 – Phase Ic
This model represents Southern Pacific #1901 with the Phase Ic body configuration. Rapido's detailed reproduction captures the locomotive's compact proportions, distinctive exterior equipment, and recognizable Southern Pacific black Tiger Stripe appearance.
Its small size makes it especially well suited for branch-line operations, industrial switching, engine terminals, and compact HO Scale railroad layouts.
Factory-Installed ESU DCC & Sound
This locomotive features a factory-installed ESU DCC/Sound decoder with realistic diesel engine sounds, horn, bell, and additional operating functions. Rapido's MoPower capacitor system helps maintain decoder operation through brief interruptions in electrical pickup, particularly useful when switching through turnouts and industrial trackage.

General Electric 44 Tonner Prototype History
Introduced in 1940, the GE 44 Tonner was designed as a lightweight diesel-electric switcher weighing approximately 88,000 pounds. Its development was influenced by railroad labor agreements requiring additional crew members on locomotives weighing more than 90,000 pounds.
More than 300 GE 44 Tonners were constructed between 1940 and 1956 for major railroads, shortlines, industrial operators, and military installations. Many remained in service for decades, making them an important part of North America's early diesel locomotive history.
