Plan height changes around the railway

Use low ground cover for the broad area and taller-looking growth where the scene suggests it, such as a boundary, fence line or drainage edge. Leave maintained routes open and keep stray material away from rails, wheels and mechanisms. Small patches can communicate the setting without hiding the railway.

Plan the surrounding railway scene

Try grass along a fence, beside a farm lane or at the edge of a railway embankment. Use shorter-looking ground treatments nearby to give the taller vegetation a clear scenic role. Plan small interrupted groups rather than an identical strip along every track. Keep paths, access roads and maintained areas visibly separate. Test the arrangement from the operator aisle so the planting does not hide small scenic features.

Does field grass need to be used across a whole field?

No. A few patches near a fence, field boundary or trackside access route can suggest taller growth while preserving open ground. Build up the scene gradually and keep loose strands away from rolling-stock wheels and mechanisms.
