Separate scenic gravel from a ballast specification

The terms fine, medium and coarse describe product grades and do not by themselves establish ballast compatibility for HO, N or another railroad scale. Compare actual particles with your track and intended scene. Keep loose material and adhesive away from point blades, rail contact surfaces and moving components.

Plan the surrounding railway scene

Try gravel around a lineside shed, on a service road or in an open yard area outside the running rails.
