Pullman-Standard PS-2 covered hoppers became an important part of railroad freight operations during the postwar era. Their enclosed bodies protected commodities such as cement, sand, and other dry materials from the elements, while roof loading hatches and bottom discharge outlets allowed for efficient loading and unloading.
